المان خنک کننده TEC یا صفحات Peltier قطعاتی هستند که با اعمال ولتاژ به دو سر آن ها با عبور جریان الکتریکی باعث ایجاد یک اختلاف دمای نسبتا بالا بین دو صفحه آن می شود.به طوری که گرما از یک سمت به سمت دیگر منتقل می شود.

دستکاههایی که با ماژول های TEC سرما تولید می کنند نسبت به یخچال ها نیاز به کمپرسور ندارند به همین دلیل کم حجم هستند و وزن پایینی دارند و به دلیل عدم استفاده از گازهای مخرب مانند فریون، کاملا با محیط سازگار هستند. این دسته از خنک کننده ها به دلیل نداشتن قطعه متحرک مکانیکی، کاملا بدون صدا می باشند. جهت دستیابی به دمای دقیق و سرعت پاسخ دهی بالا می توان از کنترلر دما برای المان های سرد کننده استفاده کرد.

این المان خنک کننده باید در ترکیب با هیت سینک و خمیر سیلیکون استفاده گردد تا از سوختن المان جلوگیری شود.

Thermoelectric cooling uses the Peltier effect to create a heat flux at the junction of two different types of materials. A Peltier cooler, heater, or thermoelectric heat pump is a solid-state active heat pump which transfers heat from one side of the device to the other, with consumption of electrical energy, depending on the direction of the current. Such an instrument is also called a Peltier device, Peltier heat pump, solid-state refrigerator, or thermoelectric cooler (TEC).

Thermoelectric generators could be used in power plants to convert waste heat into additional electrical power and in automobiles as automotive thermoelectric generators (ATGs) to increase fuel efficiency. Another application is radioisotope thermoelectric generators which are used in space probes, which have the same mechanism but use radioisotopes to generate the required heat difference.

Thermoelectric generators are all-solid-state devices that do not require any fluids for fuel or cooling, making them non-orientation dependent allowing for use in zero-gravity or deep-sea applications.

Most thermoelectric materials today have a zT, the figure of merit, value of around 1, such as in bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) at room temperature and lead telluride (PbTe) at 500–700 K.

The vast majority of thermoelectric coolers have an ID printed on the cooled side.

These universal IDs clearly indicate the size, number of stages, number of couples, and current rating in amps. Very common Tec1-12706, the square of 40 millimeters size and 3-4 mm high, are found for a few dollars and sold as able to move around 60W or generate a 60°C temperature difference with a 6 Amp current. Their electrical resistance will be of 1-2 ohm magnitude.
